The Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (MPNL) graduate program, in the School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA), at Carleton University, is accepting applications for a PhD student as a Research Associate to support a new initiative on Women in Philanthropy. The project is funded by a woman philanthropist interested in advancing knowledge and the work of women in the philanthropic and charitable sector.

The Research Associate will work with a team led by a Postdoctoral Fellow and faculty member to develop and carry out research on women in roles as donors, volunteers, activists, founders, investors, innovators, leaders and professionals in the philanthropic sector. Knowledge mobilization and community engagement will be major components of the project to learn from and contribute to philanthropic practice in Canada and build this field of research.

The team will collaborate with women philanthropists and sector leaders and convene conversations to enable the project to champion a deeper understanding of women in philanthropy. The PhD candidate will be expected to contribute to academic and practice-oriented papers, reports, blogs and other forms of communication. An interest in philanthropy/nonprofit studies and/or gender analysis and an ability to apply a variety of methodological approaches are assets.

Expectations are for at least ten hours per week on the project, which may also form part of the candidate’s dissertation research. Annual funding of $30,000 is renewable for three years, subject to annual reviews based on meeting milestones and impact indicators. Ideally, the candidate would remain in the position for three years. The expected start is summer 2025 (to be negotiated). The position is open to candidates in a PhD program in any relevant discipline, with preference to candidates enrolled at Carleton University.

To apply, please email a CV, a statement of fit/interest and the names of three references to Professor Susan Phillips before December 20, 2024, at susan.phillips@carleton.ca, with “Women in Philanthropy PhD” in the subject line.
